CRYSTALLINES

Low fired porcelain, crystalline glaze fired porcelain
120*120*2cm, wall installation
Bath, England  |  2005

I started investigating  crystals and became fascinated by their behaviours and properties and molecular structures, and so wanted to create something that alluded to that polarity of order and chaos. At first glance the installation appears a banal check pattern, though upon closer inspection actually contains the many details of the naturally occurring crystals. The blue/black crystals are grown at extremely hot temperatures inside the kiln when the glaze is in a liquid state. The white textured porcelain crystals are the shapes left behind after freezing wet liquid porcelain slip and then thawing very rapidly.
