SHADOWMARKS

Mixed media on paper
60*80cm approx
Bath, England  |  2004

Starting from a sunny afternoon and the plan to draw bushes and trees,  I realised that the light shining through the leaves created patches of shadow on my blank white sheet of paper on the ground. After quickly outlining these shapes into circles using pencil it became clear that in that very short time the pencil marks and the shadows were already slightly out of sync. Just like a sundial, the bush had acted as a pivot between the sun and the ground, offering a way of expressing the turning of the earth. I went on to experiment with various materials and colours staging the moving patterns of the shadows on the paper. Drawing them in in that way felt to me like the individual film frames from a movie layered ontop of each other.
