SEEDTILES
Porcelain tile, porcelain slip, soil, glaze
40*30- 60*40cm
Jingdezhen, China | 2011
I had just discovered the traditional Chinese glazing spraying tool that had enabled the ancient Chinese to manually blow the glaze smoothly, evenly and efficiently onto the clay form, and that is still used today. I used it to spray layers of porcelain slip, glaze and soil onto porcelain tiles made locally in Jingdezhen with layers of rice seeds, to create relief landscapes that for me also referenced the abundance of rice now in start contrast to recent times gone by and the new wealth and health of the country. Sketches included use paper, ink, porcelain and soil.
