RAINBOW ROUTE
Coloured chalk
14*6m, ground-based installation drawing
Shrewsbury, England | 2019
I find it interesting how just a few ambiguous marks on the ground can totally change the course of a persons path. Sometimes this can be to divert traffic and other times this can be to actively involve and engage people. As part of the Belle Vue Arts Festival Let's Celebrate Art event I wanted to create a winding path that would be intriguing for people of all ages to follow and enter the festival. Since returning to the UK from conservative China I have been struck by the huge shift in society in my home country - where attitudes towards LGBTQ communities have progressed and the new favourite colour for most kids is proudly 'rainbow'. We are walking this path together. I created a ground-based temporary installation artwork in multi-colured chalk using simple line and dot marks to create a primitive pattern, in collaboration with passers-by who joined in the fun! www.bellevueartsfestival.co.uk
