PARCHMENTS

Calligraphy paper, ink, soil, porcelain, PVA
35*35cm each, displayed in glass sheets
Jingdezhen, China  |  2011

This short series of sketches use ink, porcelain and soil sprayed onto the surface of thin calligraphy rice paper, built up with layers of rice. This was my first wave of experiments thinking about Chinese ancient civilization and ink painting composition. The effect on the paper gave a feel for me like an old document or parchment - possibly unexpectedly found and offering some great truth. The marks on the surface of the paper can resemble things from the micro/macro world - from single celled organisms to galaxies in outer space.
