QUADMATS

Felt calligraphy mats, red ink stamps, black spray paint
35*170- 45*55cm approx
Guangzhou, China  |  2016

Crosswords are a very English puzzle and I wanted to convey these familiar feelings - confusion, challenge and perserverance - that I often had when navigating and studying Chinese language and culture. Using my collection of jade ink stamps, carved with geometric elemental Chinese characters, I wanted to create a series of prints on the Chinese woolen gridwork mats used for practising writing characters. Considering new technologies and algorithms I wanted to reference the inherent programming of organisms within nature, for example within DNA. This series of 2D works was created alongside the 3D Technopods series.
