China is currently in the midst of industrialisation and urbanisation, a huge project of development and expansion. The face of the country is in flux, changing all the time, as new buildings go up and new roads and surfacing is put down to create a totally different landscape to the traditional, rural and arable past. Until just a few years ago many people were hungry peasants - a neutral word in the language. Through western eyes there are many things that instantly feel very familiar, although it seems to me that many Chinese still have a strong sense of their relationship to nature - through their priorities, habits and beliefs. This piece responds to these ideas, referencing the histories beneath our feel and the unstoppable power of nature and the creative human spirit.
